Dice Roller

Roll colorful 3D dice and see them tumble, with the total worked out for you.

A six-sided die is the standard one. Pick a common number of sides with the buttons, or type your own.

This tool does not save your rolls or history and never sends them to a server. Refresh and the recent results list is emptied.

    How to use

    1. Enter the number of dice as a whole number from 1 to 10. It starts at 2. If it is not a number, is empty or is out of range, the screen tells you which box to fix and how.
    2. Set the number of sides. A standard die has 6 sides, and the D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20 and D100 buttons enter that value right away. For any other number of sides, type a whole number from 2 to 1000.
    3. Click "Roll the dice" or press Enter in a box. The dice fly in from above, hit the floor, bounce a few times, roll and stop. You hear the throw, the hit on the floor and the rattle. If you do not want to wait, click "Skip" to see the result right away.
    4. The result shows on the top faces of the stopped dice and as text underneath. One die gives something like "Result 14", and several dice give something like "3, 5 — total 8" with each number and the total. If every die lands on the same number, you are told.
    5. The "Recent results" list below keeps the latest 10 rolls in a form like "2D6: 3, 5 (total 8)". To keep rolling with the same settings, just press the button again. The list is emptied when you refresh.

    About Dice Roller

This is an online die you can pull out at once when you lose the dice in a board game, or need a quick bet or turn order at a gathering. A twenty-sided die (d20), a four-sided, eight-sided, ten-sided or twelve-sided one, which role-playing games use a lot, can be rolled just by changing the number of sides. In a game where you roll several dice, it adds the total for you, so there are fewer mental arithmetic mistakes.

"2D6" is a notation meaning "roll two six-sided dice". The number before the D is the number of dice and the number after it is the number of sides, so 1D20 is one twenty-sided die and 3D8 is three eight-sided dice. The recent results list uses the same notation, showing the setting, each die and the total on one line, such as "2D6: 3, 5 (total 8)".

When you roll several dice and add them up, not every total is equally likely. Two six-sided dice have 36 outcomes, and a total of 7 happens in 6 of them, the most common, at about one in six (16.7%). A total of 2 or 12 happens in only 1 outcome each, about one in 36. A single d20, on the other hand, gives each number from 1 to 20 one chance in 20. That is the theoretical probability, though, and in just a few rolls it is natural for things to look lopsided.

Each die is decided with your browser's secure random numbers. Simply using the remainder of a random number divided by the number of sides would make the numbers at the start come up slightly more often, so this tool throws away values in the range where that bias would happen and draws again, so every face has the same probability. You can roll 1 to 10 dice with 2 to 1000 sides.

A six-sided die works like a real one, where opposite faces add up to 7 (1 and 6, 2 and 5, 3 and 4). Which number comes up is decided before the throw, and the die rolls so that number ends on top. Dice that are not six-sided are drawn as a box with numbers on six faces, and they stop with the face showing the rolled number on top. They are not polyhedron shapes like a 4-sided or 20-sided die, but the numbers and probabilities are exactly the stated number of sides. When you roll several, each die gets a different color, so it is easy to see which number came from which die.

    Frequently asked questions

Do my rolls affect each other?

No. Each roll is drawn fresh and nothing from earlier results is remembered or adjusted. The same number several times in a row is rare, but it is perfectly possible.

Are 2D6 and 1D12 the same?

No. With 1D12 every number from 1 to 12 has one chance in 12, but with 2D6 the total covers the same range 2 to 12 and gathers around the middle value, 7. Check which notation your game asks for and enter it as it is.

    What if it feels unfair?

If you roll many times, stretches that look lopsided appear naturally. Even rolling a six-sided die six times rarely shows every number once. It is better to roll dozens of times or more and look at the overall tendency.

What if I enter a decimal or 0 for the number of sides?

It does not roll, and the reason is shown under the "Roll the dice" button. The number of sides and the number of dice must both be whole numbers, with 2 to 1000 sides and 1 to 10 dice.

The screen moving while it rolls bothers me.

Click the "Skip" button that appears while it rolls and the motion stops and the result is shown at once. For screen reader users, only the final result text is read out, not the scenes in the middle of the roll.

Can I prove a result to a friend?

This tool does not save results or keep them on a server, so there is no way to check later. If you need proof for a bet, watch the roll together or take a screenshot of the screen.
