Team Splitter

Enter a list of names and split them into fair, random teams.

Writing the same name twice counts as two people. If two people share a name, add A, B or a number after it to tell them apart.

The names you enter are saved only in your browser on this device, so they are still there next time. They are never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. Enter the participants' names, one per line. You can also paste names joined with commas and they are split into one person each. The names are saved in this browser.
  2. Under "How to split", choose whether to split by the number of teams or by the number of people per team. For example, splitting 12 people with "By number of teams: 3" makes 3 teams of 4, and splitting with "By people per team: 5" makes 3 teams (4, 4 and 4 people).
  3. Enter the number of teams or people per team in the "Number" box and click "Split into teams". Only whole numbers of 1 or more are accepted.
  4. A card for each team shows the team name and its members. If you are not happy with the result, click the button again to reshuffle; each click replaces the previous result with a new one.
  5. Click "Copy" and each team is copied on its own line in a format like "Team 1: Ann, Ben". Paste it straight into a group chat or a note.

About Team Splitter

This tool is for any time you need to decide who is on which team: forming groups in class, a mini game at a club, table seating at a dinner or workshop, or picking sides for a sports day. When people split up on their own, friends end up together or the person choosing feels watched. Type in the names, press a button, and it is sorted out at once without that pressure.

The method is simple. The names you entered are shuffled evenly with your browser's random number generator (crypto based), then handed out one at a time to team 1, team 2 and so on in turn. That is why, even when the number of people does not divide evenly, team sizes differ by at most one person. The shuffle is fair, but it does not balance skill, gender, grade or any other condition. If you need that, swap people after seeing the result.

The list of names is shared by four tools: the wheel, the team splitter, the order picker and the name picker. Changes made in one tool are filled into the box when you open another tool's page; a tab that is already open needs a refresh to show them. A weight you added in the wheel, like "Pizza:3", stays in the list and looks like one person called "Pizza:3" here, so remove the ":3" before splitting. To clear the list, empty the box, or clear this site's data in your browser.

Splitting 10 people with "By people per team: 4" makes 3 teams of 4, 3 and 3 people. The number of people per team is the maximum for a team, so to make every team exactly 4, use a multiple of 4 people or split by the number of teams instead. The same name entered twice counts as two people, so if two people share a name, write them as "Alex A" and "Alex B". On a shared computer, empty the box when you are done, because the saved list would be visible to the next person.

Frequently asked questions

What if the number of people does not divide evenly?

Some teams get one extra person. For example, 7 people in 3 teams makes 3, 2 and 2, and which team gets 3 depends on the shuffled order.

What if I enter more teams than people?

Only as many teams as there are people are made, with one person on each team. In that case a note appears above the result.

What happens when two people have the same name?

They are counted as different people, so they can land on different teams or on the same one. To tell them apart in the result, add A, B or a number after the name.

Can I keep two people together or apart?

There is no such fixed rule. Everyone is shuffled with the same chances, so if you need a condition, look at the result and swap people.

Do I get the same result if I press again with the same names and number?

No. Each press shuffles again, so the result changes. If you want to keep a result, copy it. Refreshing the page clears the previous result from the screen.

What if I enter 0 or a decimal in the number box?

Only whole numbers of 1 or more are allowed, so you get a message and no teams are made. Fix the number and press the button again.
